I thought I was doing everything right for my health. What I hadn't realized was that I was so busy following everyone else's protocols that I wasn't listening to my own body.
As we're getting closer to another Hack Your Health conference, I've found myself reflecting on just how much has changed since my very first KetoCon/Hack Your Health experience in Austin, Texas, in May 2024.
Looking at these pictures side by side, the three on the left from that first conference and the three on the right from today, I see so much more than a physical transformation.
I see two very different chapters of my life.
And WOW, what a difference a couple of years, a whole lot of learning, hundreds of ordinary, imperfect days, and a willingness to challenge everything I thought I knew can make! ❤️
When I Thought I Was Hacking My Health
Back in May 2024, I genuinely believed I was doing ALL the things to optimize my health.
I was following dietary protocols, implementing the latest health hacks, eliminating foods, tracking macros, and listening to what others said was the optimal way to achieve metabolic health.
I'd spent years navigating different nutritional approaches, from keto and carnivore to high-fat, moderate-protein strategies, always searching for the combination that would finally give me the results I wanted.
And I wasn't just someone following these approaches. I was a health coach who believed in much of what I was teaching.
But here's what I wasn't doing nearly enough of.
LISTENING TO MY OWN BODY.
My body was giving me signals that something wasn't working as well as I believed it should.
My thyroid health, insulin resistance, energy, recovery, hair loss, and metabolic markers were telling a story that didn't always match the narrative I was following.
And instead of questioning the approach, I questioned whether I was doing enough.
Maybe I needed to restrict more. Maybe I needed to eliminate another food group. Maybe I needed to adjust my macros again, exercise harder, or find another supplement to fill whatever gap I thought was missing.
Sound familiar?
I was so focused on doing everything RIGHT according to someone else's framework that I wasn't giving enough consideration to what my own biology was communicating.
And that realization would eventually change everything.
The Biggest Hack Was Learning to Stop Chasing Hacks
One of the most important lessons I've learned is that something can be beneficial for one person, during one season of life, and not necessarily be the right approach for another.
That doesn't automatically make the approach wrong.
It means context matters.
Your metabolic health doesn't exist in isolation from your sleep, stress, hormones, light environment, activity, nutrition, relationships, or recovery.
And neither does your nervous system.
I began looking at my health through a much wider lens, paying attention to the signals my body was receiving throughout the ENTIRE day rather than focusing almost exclusively on what I was eating.
I started prioritizing my circadian rhythms, spending more time outdoors, protecting my sleep, nourishing my body without fearing entire food groups, and making room for carbohydrates again.
I learned to recognize when I needed movement and when I needed recovery. I began paying closer attention to my stress responses, energy, hunger, and the way my body adapted to different routines.
And perhaps most importantly, I stopped treating every plateau as a reason to push harder.
I didn't abandon the science of energy balance. I changed HOW I approached it.
Instead of chasing the largest possible calorie deficit, I focused on creating an appropriate, sustainable energy gap while making sure my body was adequately nourished and supported.
I began building consistency around the foundational practices that I could actually maintain.
Not another extreme.
Not another rigid set of rules.
A lifestyle that worked WITH my body rather than constantly demanding more from it.
From Following Protocols to Building the Aligned Metabolism Method™
This evolution became a significant part of what I now teach through my Aligned Metabolism Method™.
My philosophy isn't that nutrition doesn't matter, that calories don't count, or that every health challenge can be resolved by getting outside at sunrise.
It's that we cannot keep looking at one piece of the puzzle and expecting it to explain the entire picture.
Circadian alignment, hormonal signaling, nervous system regulation, metabolic fueling, and sustainable implementation all deserve consideration.
And just as importantly, we have to recognize that our needs can change.
The approach that supported you five years ago might not be what your body needs today.
The goal isn't to become really good at following someone else's protocol. It's to become really good at understanding YOUR OWN biology.
That's why I encourage my clients to become active participants in their health rather than simply collecting another list of rules.
We look at their habits, symptoms, goals, lifestyle, and patterns. We work on the foundations, make adjustments when needed, and learn from the feedback their bodies provide.
Because sometimes the answer isn't doing MORE.
Sometimes it's understanding what you're already doing and whether it's actually supporting the results you're trying to achieve.
86+ Pounds Later, the Biggest Change Isn't Just Physical
Looking at these pictures, it's easy to focus on the visible transformation.
And yes, losing more than 86 pounds is something I'm incredibly proud of!
But I want you to understand what those pictures DON'T show.
They don't show the hundreds of ordinary, imperfect days that made this possible.
The small walks when I didn't have time for a full workout. The basic strength-training sessions that weren't particularly exciting. The meals that consistently nourished my body. The mornings spent reconnecting with natural light. The evenings when I chose sleep over pushing through one more task.
They don't show the weeks when progress was slower than I wanted, the times I had to adjust my approach, or the moments when I questioned whether the small things were really making a difference.
And they certainly don't show every lesson I had to unlearn along the way.
But those small, consistent actions accumulated.
Today, I'm continuing to build strength, improve my metabolic health, and maintain a healthier relationship with food, movement, and my body.
I'm eating more carbohydrates than I once imagined I would, and I'm no longer living in constant pursuit of the next restrictive protocol.
My transformation wasn't built on extraordinary days. It was built on hundreds of ordinary ones.
And THAT is how the impossible became I'M POSSIBLE! 💪❤️
I didn't need another extreme.
I needed alignment, consistency, and the willingness to listen.
And Speaking of Relationships... Look How Far Beyond Nutrition Has Come! ❤️
There's another part of this journey that makes looking back at May 2024 especially meaningful.
That month also marked ONE YEAR since my best friend, Sherri, and I decided to bring the Beyond Nutrition podcast to life!
What started as two friends wanting to share our experiences, question health narratives, and have meaningful conversations has continued growing into something we're incredibly grateful for.
We've learned together, challenged our own beliefs, shared personal experiences, and created a space where people can explore their health beyond another diet or quick fix.
And just like our individual health journeys, the evolution of Beyond Nutrition hasn't always been perfectly linear.
We've had seasons of growth, seasons of recalibration, and plenty of lessons along the way.
But our purpose has remained the same.
To educate, encourage, and help people build a healthier, more sustainable relationship with their bodies and their lives.
And now we've ventured into our amazing blogging era, too!
This month alone, our content has received over 10,700 views! 🤯❤️
That's more than a number to us.
Every view represents someone who chose to spend a little time reading, watching, listening, or exploring a different perspective.
To everyone who follows our journey, listens to the podcast, reads our blogs, shares our content, asks questions, or quietly takes something meaningful from our conversations, THANK YOU!
We truly appreciate you.
You've helped turn something that began as a shared passion between two friends into a growing community of learning, connection, and support.
And we're excited to see where this next chapter takes us.
The Woman I Was in May 2024 Deserves Credit, Too
As I look back at these pictures, I don't see someone who failed.
I see someone who was trying.
Someone who was learning, searching, and doing what she genuinely believed was best with the information she had at the time.
I don't regret that chapter because it helped shape the coach and person I am today.
But I also recognize how important it was to become willing to question what wasn't working.
Sometimes growth requires us to acknowledge that the approach we've invested so much time, energy, and belief into might need to evolve.
And that can be uncomfortable, especially when we've built part of our identity around it.
But changing direction doesn't erase the progress you've already made.
It can be the very thing that allows you to move forward.
Sometimes the biggest breakthrough isn't finding another answer. It's realizing you've been overlooking the signals your own body has been giving you.
So as we prepare for another Hack Your Health conference, I'm looking forward to reconnecting, learning, having meaningful conversations, and continuing to challenge myself to grow.
Because I never want to become so attached to one approach that I stop being curious.
🌱 Progress over perfection.
☀️ Alignment over obsession.
❤️ Understanding over blindly following.
💪 Consistency over extremes.
And most importantly, learning to trust our inner compass while remaining open to new information.
Here's to another chapter of Hack Your Health, Beyond Nutrition, and everything still to come!
I'd love to know: Have you ever had to rethink something you once believed was absolutely essential to your health?
