The Meal Prep That Makes My Nervous System Exhale

emotional resilience tips food mealprep nervous system regulation sherri Jul 08, 2026

There is a version of me who used to think meal prep was about discipline. About being “good,” staying on track, proving I could keep up.

Back then, everything felt like a test I was either passing or failing. Food was not supportive; it was something I had to manage. Something I had to earn. I was constantly checking in with rules instead of my body, constantly trying to override what I actually needed.

And the truth is, that version of me was always exhausted. Not just physically but mentally, emotionally, deeply tired of the constant negotiation.

Because I work outside the home. My days are full. By the time I am hungry, I am already stretched thin. And that is when it used to happen the drive-thru, the “quick” options, the meals cooked in seed oils that left me feeling heavy and not actually nourished. It was not just about convenience. It was about survival in a moment where I had no capacity left. Can you relate?

Now I meal prep for one reason: to make my nervous system exhale. Not to control my body. Not to follow rules. And definitely not to chase perfection. But because I do not want to rely on fast food that makes me feeling worse. I do not want to spend money on meals that do not support me. And I do not want the hunger to make decisions for me anymore.

When I have food ready, real food, food I trust, my body softens. There is no panic. No scrambling. No settling. The decision has already been made by a version of me who cared enough to prepare.

My day moves differently when I know I do not have to depend on whether it is closest or fastest. There is a steadiness there. A sense of “I’ve got myself,” even in the middle of a full, demanding day. Because this is not just about food. This is about capacity. This is about protecting my energy.

I keep it simple, because simple is what I can sustain. Most weeks, I choose a few basic ingredients that feel grounding and easy something I can grab and go. I lean on repetition to remove decision fatigue.

I use shortcuts without guilt. frozen vegetables, simple proteins such as rotisserie chicken, or premade meatballs. This is about making nourishment accessible. And I focus on the hardest moments like lunch at work or the time right when I get home. If those are covered, everything feels easier. This is not about perfection. Most weeks I prep, some weeks I do not. Every small effort counts.

Because the world already runs on urgency and I do not need my basic needs to feel pressure too. I need steadiness. I need support. And meal prep has become one of the simplest ways I give that to myself.

Because I deserve that.

And so do you.

Sometimes it starts with something as simple as food already waiting for you.

If this resonates, if you are tired of operating in survival mode with your body, your food, your energy you do not have to figure it out alone. This is the work I do with my clients: helping you build a life that actually supports your nervous system, your routines, and your real, everyday reality. Not perfection. Not pressure. Just steady, sustainable support. I would love to walk with you; here is where you can learn more about my coaching here: 1:1 coaching.
