When a Box of Donuts Doesn’t Even Register

food mindset nervous system regulation piviot sherri Jun 24, 2026

I opened a box labeled “leftovers” and found donuts inside, you know, the kind that used to pull me into a craving spiral before I even had time to think. The kind that once felt louder than my own voice. But this time, nothing in me moved. No spike. No urgency. No internal negotiation trying to justify, delay, restrict, or give in.

Just… space.

I noticed them, and they were just there. Neutral. Ordinary. Almost forgettable.

And that’s when it hit me, this is what healing actually feels like.

This is the part no one glamorizes, because it doesn’t photograph well. It doesn’t come with a dramatic “before and after,” or a triumphant moment of resistance you can package into a story. It’s not aesthetic. It’s not loud. It’s not even something you always notice right away.

It’s a quiet shift inside the body. A subtle rewiring. The kind that sneaks up on you and gently says, “You’re not living in survival mode anymore.”

For years, a moment like this would’ve activated everything. The dopamine rush before the first bite. The guilt right after. The bargaining: just one, just today, I’ll be better tomorrow. The all-or-nothing loop that never actually ended just paused and restarted.

I thought it was a willpower problem.
A discipline problem.
A “why can’t I just be stronger?” problem.

But it was never about weakness.

It was a nervous system problem.

When your body is dysregulated, everything feels urgent. Your system is scanning for relief, for safety, for something, anything, that can shift how you feel right now. Food becomes more than food. It becomes a tool.

A distraction.
A comfort.
A numbing agent.
A reward.
A way out.

Something that promises even a few seconds of relief.

Of course, the craving feels intense and your body thinks it needs it.

But when your system begins to regulate, something changes. The urgency softens. The noise quiets. The intensity dissolves. And food… returns to its original form.

Not a solution.
Not a threat.
Not a test of your character.

Just food.

A donut becomes a donut.
A box of them becomes a non-event.

And that’s the real shift, not fighting harder, but needing to fight less.

Regulation doesn’t make you “good.”
It doesn’t make you more disciplined or more controlled.

It makes you free.

Why This Matters More Than Willpower:

Cravings aren’t moral failures. They’re not proof that you lack discipline or self-control. They are signals biological, intelligent, wired-for-survival responses.

They’re your body saying:
“I don’t feel safe.”
“I need relief.”
“I need something quickly.”

When we reduce that signal to “I just need more willpower,” we miss the deeper need entirely. And that’s why the cycle continues because you can’t out-discipline a nervous system that feels unsafe.

The real flex isn’t saying no to the donut.
It’s not needing to say no at all.

A Simple Regulation Practice That Changes Everything:

Before you eat, or before you react to the urge to eat…pause.

Not for a deep inhale.
Not for a perfect mindfulness ritual.

Just one slow, intentional exhale.

Longer than your inhale. Unforced, but complete.

Because a long exhale sends a powerful signal to your nervous system:

“We’re safe. There’s no immediate threat. We don’t need fast energy or fast comfort.”

That single moment can interrupt the urgency loop.
It can create just enough space for choice to come back online.
It gently brings you out of reaction and back into your body.

And it’s in that space, not in restriction, not in force and that real change happens.

These are the shifts that don’t get posted.
The ones that don’t look impressive from the outside.
The ones no one claps for.

But they’re everything.

Because they’re sustainable.
They’re embodied.
They’re yours.

And over time, these small, unglamorous practices don’t just change how you eat.

They change how you live.
