Getting Back to Basics: The Start of a New Movement Journey

We all know how easy it is to get out of the habit of regular movement. Life gets busy, priorities shift, and before you know it, that consistent workout routine has taken a backseat. But here’s the thing: it’s never too late to start again.

Tonight, I made the decision to stop putting it off and finally dusted off the dungeon (aka my basement workout space). It wasn’t fancy or complicated, but it was intentional. And that’s what matters most. Here’s what my first structured workout in a while looked like:

The Routine:

  • Warm-up: Walk at 2.5 mph, 0% incline for 5 minutes.

  • Workout: Alternate every 2 minutes:

    • Walk at 3.0 mph, 2% incline.

    • Walk at 2.8 mph, 4% incline. (Repeat for a total of 20 minutes.)

  • Cool-down: Walk at 2.5 mph, 0% incline for 5 minutes.

Bodyweight Strength:

  • 10 bodyweight squats
  • 10 wall push-ups
  • 10 standing knee lifts (each side)

This simple session reminded me how powerful small steps can be. It’s not about going all out or trying to do too much at once. The goal is to start where you are, with what you have, and to show up for yourself.

Why Movement Matters

Getting back to a movement routine isn’t just about fitness goals or physical transformations. It’s about reconnecting with your body and reminding yourself that you’re capable of more than you think. Movement helps:

  • Boost your mood and reduce stress.

  • Improve your sleep quality.

  • Enhance your energy levels.

  • Lay the foundation for long-term health and wellness.

Starting Over: Tips for Success

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Don’t aim for perfection. Aim for progress. Even a 15-minute walk is better than doing nothing.

  2. Start Small: Ease back into movement with activities that feel good and are sustainable. This helps build confidence and consistency.

  3. Celebrate Small Wins: Every workout is a step in the right direction. Acknowledge and celebrate your efforts.

  4. Make It Enjoyable: Choose activities you love, whether it’s walking, dancing, yoga, or weightlifting.

  5. Be Patient with Yourself: Remember, it’s okay to start slow. The important thing is that you start.

Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning of my movement journey, and I’m excited to share it with you. Whether you’re just starting or restarting like me, know that you’re not alone. Let’s support and motivate each other to keep moving forward, one step at a time.

Are you ready to join me in getting back to basics? Let’s commit to showing up for ourselves and rediscovering the joy of movement.

Here’s to building strength, consistency, and confidence together. 🏆
