Shift Your Mindset: Embrace the Soreness, Love the Journey

For so long, I saw soreness as an excuse—a reason to take an unnecessary rest day or not show up at all. I gave myself permission to “take it easy,” thinking I was being kind to my body. But I’ve realized there’s a difference between intentional recovery and simply avoiding the work. Yes, rest is essential, but so is learning to listen to my body, push through discomfort when needed, and recognize when I’m just making excuses. This was a repetitive pattern to the point every time we cleaned the basement my husband would threaten to just get rid of the equipment because "it was just taking up space".

✨ Soreness isn’t a punishment—it’s a privilege. ✨ It’s proof that I showed up for myself. That I pushed my limits, that my body is growing, adapting, and becoming stronger. Instead of dreading it, I’ve learned to appreciate it.

I get to move. I get to challenge myself. I get to feel the burn and know that it’s shaping me into a healthier, stronger version of myself. Not everyone has that opportunity, and today, I choose gratitude over complaint.

Reflecting on 2024: Breaking the Cycle

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. Looking back at 2024, I see the pattern clearly—there were spurts of movement and workouts. As I said before when my husband would say we are getting rid of it - I would use it for a short period of time then fall off the routine or move to doing Kettlebell sessions in the yard, walking laps around the driveway, indoor routines, and even adding VR boxing. But none of these had structure; they were simply things I randomly did based on what I "felt" like doing. The issue? When there’s no plan, motivation fades, structure falls apart, and consistency disappears. I’d stop showing up, or I’d get sore and convince myself I "deserved" a break—which turned into six months away from training. I would drop the ball in this part of my journey I could very structured and speak to fail to plan - plan to fail. I would plan out & make other parts non negotiable - grounding, sunrise, parasympathetic work, seasonal eating....but the movement was still hit or miss.

What’s Different Going into 2025?

This year, I’m breaking the cycle. I’ve created S.M.A.R.T. goals (coaching clients, you know exactly what I mean by these since we’ve worked on setting them together). I am applying the same mindset shifts and goal-setting strategies I teach my clients. I’m committed to showing up, staying consistent, and loving myself through the process.

And the biggest shift? I no longer compare my progress to someone else’s. Their journey isn’t mine, and my only competition is the person I was yesterday. 🚀 Loving myself means showing up, putting in the effort, and knowing that every step forward—no matter how small—is still progress.

So instead of resisting the aches and pains, I’m learning to love myself through the process—through every sore muscle, every deep stretch, and every moment my body reminds me of the work I’ve put in.
